The Peekapoo is not a purebred dog. It’s a hybrid or designer dog breed cross between a Pekingese and a poodle. Like poodles, they can be easy to train, and like other small breeds can live 12 to 15 years or older. Poodles are known to be one of the most intelligent of dogs. Also, they are non-shedding and perfect for adoption.

History of Peekapoo

The Peekapoo is a designer dog but actually is older than many coming from the 1950s and 1960s instead of the last 20 years. He was developed in the 1950s with the cross of a Pekingese with a Miniature or poodle. The goal was to provide a non- to low-shedding dog appropriate for people with allergies. The Peekapoo gained quality by the first 1960s.

A poodle is a group of formal dog breeds, the Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle. The origins of the poodles are still discussed with a dispute over whether the poodle descends from the old French Barbet breed or from Germany as a type of water dog. According to the American Kennel Club, which recognized the breed in 1887.

The Pekingese is an ancient breed of toy dog, originating in China. They are called Lion Dogs due to their resemblance to Chinese guardian lions. The Pekingese breed is over 2000 years old and has hardly changed in all that time. One exception is that modern breeders and dog show judges seem to prefer the long-haired type over the more traditional spaniel-type coat.

The Peekapoo is a conscious and active member of the family. He wants to go wherever he wants to go and likes to sit and crawl into his lap. This is a very large surveillance dog, it usually lives well with other dogs and pets if they are offered in puberty. The Pee-ka-poo is a super smart, very loving dog.

Size:  Pekepoos are around 11 inches tall and usually weigh between 9 to 20 pounds when fully grown. It’s not a pure breed.

The soft, Pookapu coat of texture is wavy and long to medium. She does not play a scalp. And the overall coat is less shady.

Shedding: Pekapu’s coat is short and dense, hence it needs less care. And It’s comfortable in extreme heat and humidity and it can stay well in cold snow season.

The top skull is massive, broad and flat and, when combined with the wide-set eyes, cheekbones, and broad lower jaw, forms the correctly shaped face

Muzzle: It is very flat, broad, and well filled-in below the eyes. The skin is black in all colors. Whiskers add to the desired expression.
Eyes: The Pekepoo is susceptible to having overactive tear ducts like the Poodle.
Ears: They are heart-shaped, set on the front corners of the top skull, and lie flat against the head.
Nose: It is broad, short and black. Nostrils are wide and open rather than pinched.

The Peekapoo is a very loving and loyal dog good for families. And as an ideal lap dog, he delights in being part of every family activity.

Like Pekinese, Pekapoos may be protective of their owners and may growl or attempt to nip. They can also bite when people or other animals come near their food. They can be slightly timid and uncomfortable around strangers. Like many small dogs, Pekapoos’ barks can be loud and noisy. They tend to “warning bark” at strangers, other dogs, or suspicious noises.

This breed is known to have a long lifespan.  Most owners and breeders expect their dogs to live between 10 to 16 years. They are generally healthy, but like all hybrid breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. Not all Peekapoos will get any or all of these diseases, but it’s important to be aware of them if you’re considering this breed.

Common health problems

Pekapoo dogs are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they are prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, Patellar Luxation and hip dysplasia.

Patellar Luxation: Patellar luxation a condition common in this breed’s lineage, is more popularly known as the patella slip. This refers to the condition where the knee is slipping out of place, which can affect the dog’s ability to walk later in life.

Legg Calve Perthes Disease: Common to small dog breeds, the Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease is a condition where the blood supply to the femur significantly decreases. Once it progresses, the pelvis can degenerate

Hip Dysplasia: One of the most common problems experienced by Peekapoo is known as hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is caused by a malformation of the hip joint, which results in the leg bone connecting improperly to the pelvis.

Ear Infections: this can be a problem for Peekapoo’s due to dirty ears. Make sure you keep their ears clean and check on them often.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy: eye diseases that involves the gradual deterioration of the retina. Affected dogs become night-blind; they lose sight during the day as the disease progresses. There are no known ways to fix this yet.

Feeding Plan

Feeding is an important part of the every dog’s life. So give a healthy and best dry dog food for your Pekapoo. Feeding amounts for dogs will always vary on the breed type and the size of the dog. Typically an average Pekapoo will need to eat two servings of 2 to 3 cups of higher quality dry food a day.
