Personality and Temperament

Personality of Cockapoo

The Cockapoo is friendly, people oriented, and easy to train. Cockapoos are carefully bred and lovingly raised should be happy, affectionate dogs that love families, children, other dogs, and even cats. This hybrid mix of poodle and spaniel has a quirky personality and manner of thinking that is important to understand.

Cockapoo’s personality will vary, but most Cockapoos are friendly and gentle-spirited dogs. Cockapoo typically get along with other dogs and cats – they also are eager to make friends with strangers, so they might not make the best guard dogs.

Cockapoo Temperament

The temperament of any dog is determined by two things the genetic material of the parent and early socialization experiences. The temperament of multigenerational Cockapoos is more standardized than that of 1st generation breeding. Cockapoos are very people-oriented, outgoing, and happy dog.

The playful personality appeals to young and old alike. They are also highly intelligent, having inherited this from both their parent breeds. These dogs, especially the mini and maxi-sized dogs, can make terrific companions for children.

Activity Requirements

The Cockapoo is a very intelligent dog, making training a breeze at times. Cockapoos have become popular because they generally combine the outgoing, loving personality of the cocker spaniel with the low-shedding, low-dander qualities of the poodle, resulting in a loving, intelligent, very energetic and agile dog that sheds very little.

Behavioral Traits

Cockapoo bark at everything and everybody and it can be difficult to train this tendency out of them. Socialization and proper exercise can help. Pomeranians are not recommended for families with small children. They are possessive of their toys and food and can snap or bite toddlers who do not understand how to respect a dog’s boundary.

Cockapoos are quick learners, but the downside to this is they are just as quick to pick up bad behaviors and habits too, which is why their training has to be consistent from the word go and throughout their lives. They do respond extremely well to positive reinforcement, especially when it involves receiving a high value treat. They are sensitive little dogs by nature and as such, they do not answer well to any sort of harsh correction or heavier handed training methods.

Health & problems

The Cockapoo is a mixed breed, there may be less of a susceptibility to the genetic health problems that are more common in the purebred dogs from either side of their ancestry. The Cockapoo Club of America stresses breeding for health and better temperament rather than confirmation. As a result, these dogs are relatively healthier than either of their parent breeds.

Feeding Plan

Cockapoos like to eat and can quickly become overweight. They need to be fed a high-quality diet of dry kibble. Dry food will help to prevent oral health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. A raw food plan involves some careful planning and purchase of meat, and the diet itself will usually consist of raw meat, bone and offal. But the general rule is to feed the equivalent of 2% to 3% of the dog’s total body weight.  Portion adjustments can be made later if necessary.

Living conditions

The Cockapoo does not require a tremendous amount of exercise, as long as he or she receives a daily walk and some playtime, the breed can live happily in just about any home, from an apartment in a large house or a farm.

Health Problems

Cockapoos are generally healthy dogs, with a life expectancy of 14 to 18 years. Some live even into their 20’s. But there are some common health issues like Hip Dysplasia,  Progressive Retinal Atroph, Patellar Luxation, Ear infections etc.

Skin allergies: The skin is the largest organ of a dog’s body and can be affected by a number of disorders. Like many other breeds, Cockapoos can suffer from allergies that lead to dermatitis.

Heart disease: Heart disease in dogs is classified as either congenital heart disease. Early diagnosis of heart problems is key, because if they progress to the ʻheart failureʼ stage, treatment will then be needed for the rest of the dogʼs life.

  1. Thank you for the wonderful way of explaining what this breed is all about. I had a Cockapoo and loved her. She lived to be 19 years. The one thing what surprised me was that they should not eat garlic. My dog craved it – never begged- except it smelled garlic. Still lived a long time nonetheless. Your info is very much appreciated. Thank you again
