History of Labradoodle

This is a designer dog between a Labrador Retriever and a poodle.

Labrador Retriever: The Labrador Retriever, also Labrador, is a type of retriever-gun dog. The Labrador is one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United Kingdom and the United States. The Labradoodle first appeared in 1955, but it was not popularized until 1988, when the mix began to be used as a hypoallergenic guide dog. This is a one of the most popular designer dog breed perfect for adoption. The Labradoodle was originally developed in Australia to be a hypoallergenic guide dog in 1988, when Australian breeder Wally Conron crossed the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle at the Royal Guide Dogs Associations of Australia in Victoria.

This first cross of Conron’s produced a dog called Sultan, who not only had the hypoallergenic coat, but also had the aptitude, intelligence, and personality to be an effective guide dog.

The Labradoodle is a hybrid “designer dog” that originated in Australia from a carefully planned cross of a Standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever. Personality

Labradoodles are now widely used around the world as guide, assist., and therapy dogs as well as being popular family dogs.  The most popular dog in the US, according to AKC statistics, is known for his extreme friendliness, gentleness, trainability and even temperament. A Labradoodle that inherits these traits may be fun-loving and affectionate, living happily with other pets and kids. They make wonderful companions for people of all ages.

Temperament

A Labradoodle’s temperament depends on several things, including the temperaments of his parents. Activity Requirements

Labradoodles are energetic, active animals. The larger variety always does best with regular exercise, including a long daily walk and lots of time and room to run. The smaller Labradoodles usually are quite comfortable living in a small home or apartment setting, provided they get a brisk daily walk and lots of physical attention.

Behavioral Traits

Labradoodles share a love of water with their field Labrador and Poodle ancestors and often will enter the water without prompting. Because so many Labradoodles in the United States are first-generation hybrids, littermates may not share the same behavioral traits. Labradoodles that do not receive enough affection or physical activity tend to bark excessively, which can annoy neighbors and owners alike.

Labradoodles are highly intelligent dogs that usually are a breeze to train. They quickly learn standard obedience commands, such as sit, down, come and stay.  Labradoodles seem to enjoy participating in competitive canine activities, such as Flyball, agility and obedience. They cannot yet participate in activities sanctioned by the American Kennel Club

Health

Labradoodles may be at increased risk of hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, obesity, eye disorders and cruciate ligament injuries. Like Poodles, Labradoodles may be predisposed to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, sebaceous adenitis and other skin problems, renal disorders and von Willebrand disease.

Feeding Plan for Labradoodle

As a large dog expected to live 14 years or more, the Labradoodle will need approximately 2.5 to 3 cups of dry dog food daily. Proper nutrition is necessary for the dog to grow and thrive.

How to take care of the Labradoodle

Exercise needed

Like most dogs, Labradoodles need regular exercise. This phrase is often confused with ‘lots of exercise’ and frequently leads to excessive exercise, particularly with young puppies.

They have a particularly vulnerable time between 14 to 26 weeks old when dogs have an accelerated growth spurt. Lasting damage can be done to joints during this phase. That’s why it is important for health care to exercise them daily.

Labradoodles can have different types of fur. They are not low-maintenance dogs when it comes to grooming. Plan to brush the Labradoodle at least every other day using a slicker brush, and have him clipped every 8 to 12 weeks.
